Hong Kong Museum of Art|Hong Kong Artist Dialogue Series:Trevor Yeung Garden Cruising: Bathers and Watchers: Art Installation
Description
In his art installation Garden Cruising: Bathers and Watchers, Hong Kong artist Trevor Yeung explores the idea of the gaze associated with the depiction of nudity in the bathers painting series by Cézanne. Yeung combines photographs with scented soft sculptures to evoke perceptual confusion between man-made objects and nature, which challenges the audience’s viewing experience. This work is on display alongside “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Cézanne and Renoir Looking at the World — Masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay” exhibition, creating a contrast of contemporary and 19th-century artistic perspectives on the relationship between people and their natural surroundings.
Trevor Yeung uses botanic ecology, horticulture and aquarium systems as metaphors for human relationships and interactions. In 2024, Yeung represented Hong Kong at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. He was also shortlisted for the Sigg Prize 2023 and had his first institutional solo exhibition at Gasworks, London (London, 2023). He has exhibited at art institutions and galleries internationally, including M+ (Hong Kong, 2023), He Art Museum (Foshan, 2023), Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (Paris, 2022), Tai Kwun Contemporary (Hong Kong, 2022), Jameel Arts Centre (Dubai, 2022), Power Station of Art (Shanghai, 2021) and Stiftung Skulpturenpark Köln (Cologne, 2020).
